Kingwood Middle School

For many years, Kingwood Middle School, the only intermediate feeder school to KPark, has achieved an impressive number of prestigious awards within their band program. As part of their commitment to musical excellence, they offer beginning band classes starting in 6th grade where student will receive comprehensive instruction in playing the instrument of their choice, regardless of their prior experience.

The 6th grade band classes are thoughtfully designed for beginners, making it the ideal time to join the band program.  Woodwind and brass instruments are grouped together, providing a more focused and tailored learning experience. Percussionists, selected through auditions during the final weeks of their 5th grade year, form their own dedicated class.

Outside of the school day, students are expected to devote time to home practice, which is crucial for success in mastering a musical instrument. Additionally, there will be two evening concerts during the year—one in winter and one in spring.

After 6th grade, students will audition for placement in one of three bands for each subsequent year they attend KMS: Concert, Symphonic, and Honor.

Meet the Directors
Band Petting Zoo

Is your student considering joining the band but unsure which instrument to choose? The Band Petting Zoo offers an exciting opportunity for 5th-grade students to explore various woodwind, brass, and percussion instruments that will be offered in the 6th-grade band.

At the Band Petting Zoo, your student can experience the sensation of correctly blowing through, holding, and fingering different instruments. We also provide helpful feedback to guide your student in selecting the instrument that best suits them, such as:

  • Flute

  • Clarinet

  • Saxophone

  • Trumpet

  • Baritone

  • French Horn

  • Trombone

  • Tuba

The Band Petting Zoo usually takes place in April. Information about the event will be sent home to all current 5th-grade students at KMS. During the event, the band directors will also discuss rental recommendations and auditions for percussion instruments. If you have any specific questions, feel free to reach out to them directly. It's important for all band students to have their instrument and method book ready by the second week of school. Join us at the Band Petting Zoo to discover the perfect instrument for your child's musical journey!
